  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Chocolate Sweet Potato Cookies are soft, chewy, and wonderfully moist, with rich dark chocolate in every bite. Mashed sweet potato adds natural sweetness and creates tender centers, while brown sugar, butter, vanilla, and cinnamon deliver classic homemade cookie flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup cooked, cooled, mashed sweet potato
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, optional
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts, optional
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans, optional
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest, optional
  • Flaky sea salt for finishing, optional

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Beat the softened butter and brown sugar until creamy, fluffy, and slightly lighter in color.

3. Add the egg and vanilla. Beat until smooth and glossy.

4. Fold in the cooled mashed sweet potato until evenly combined.

5. Whisk together the flour, baking soda, sea salt, and optional cinnamon. Gradually fold the dry mixture into the wet ingredients just until combined.

6. Fold in the dark chocolate chips and any optional walnuts, pecans, or orange zest.

7. Chill the dough for 20–30 minutes if it feels particularly soft or sticky.

8. Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake for 10–12 minutes until the edges look set and lightly golden while the centers remain soft.

9. Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Add extra chocolate chips and flaky sea salt while warm if desired.

Notes

  • Use completely cooled mashed sweet potato for the best dough consistency.
  • Avoid overmixing after adding the flour.
  • The cookie centers should still look slightly soft when they leave the oven.
  • Store cooled cookies in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4–5 days.
  • Freeze completely cooled cookies for up to 2–3 months.
