Description
Old-fashioned Cozy Blackberry Dumplings featuring juicy blackberries simmered in cinnamon-vanilla syrup with soft homemade dumplings. Perfect served warm with vanilla ice cream.
Ingredients
- 5 cups fresh blackberries
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2½ cups water
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp lemon zest
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ¾ cup whole milk
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
- Coarse sugar for garnish (optional)
Instructions
1. Combine blackberries, sugar, water, butter, cinnamon, lemon juice and zest in a Dutch oven.
2. Bring to a gentle boil and simmer for 8–10 minutes.
3. Stir in vanilla extract.
4. Mix flour, baking powder and salt.
5. Add milk and melted butter until a soft dough forms.
6. Drop spoonfuls of dough over simmering berries.
7. Cover tightly and cook on low for 15–18 minutes without lifting the lid.
8. Rest for 5 minutes before serving.
9. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
- Fresh or frozen blackberries both work well.
- Do not lift the lid while the dumplings steam.
- Best served warm.
- Store refrigerated up to 3 days.
