Description
This easy Low Carb Philly Cheesesteak Casserole combines juicy seasoned beef, peppers, onions, cream cheese, provolone, and cheddar for a rich, cheesy low-carb dinner ready in about 35 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 1 large green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 4 oz (115 g) cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 1/2 cups provolone cheese, shredded
- 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8-inch square or similar medium casserole dish.
2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, breaking it into small pieces, until browned and no pink remains. Drain excess fat if necessary.
3. Add the sliced onion, green bell pepper, and mushrooms. Cook over medium heat for 5 to 6 minutes until the vegetables soften while retaining some texture.
4. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 to 60 seconds. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper.
5. In a medium bowl, whisk together the softened cream cheese, heavy cream, beef broth, and Dijon mustard until mostly smooth.
6. Pour the cream cheese mixture into the skillet. Reduce the heat to medium-low and stir for about 2 minutes until the beef and vegetables are evenly coated. Simmer briefly if excess liquid remains.
7. Transfer the beef mixture to the prepared casserole dish and spread it evenly.
8. Sprinkle the provolone evenly over the filling, followed by the cheddar cheese.
9. Bake uncovered for 18 to 20 minutes, until the filling bubbles around the edges and the cheese melts and develops golden patches. For deeper browning, broil for 1 to 2 minutes while watching carefully.
10. Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped parsley and additional black pepper before serving.
Notes
- Thinly sliced steak can replace the ground beef for a more traditional cheesesteak-style texture.
- Mushrooms are optional and can be omitted.
- Drain excess beef fat before adding the vegetables if necessary.
- Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes before serving so the creamy filling can settle.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
- Freeze individual cooked portions for up to 2 months and thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Serve with roasted cauliflower, cauliflower rice, green beans, broccoli, zucchini, or a crisp green salad.
